View Zainab Khanbhai's ProfileWith over 15 years of experience in the field of cardiovascular and cardiothoracic pharmacy, Zainab Khanbhai has a specialist interest in diabetes and atrial fibrillation. She has led numerous innovative and successful projects, demonstrating a strong track record in driving impactful service changes. One notable achievement includes the establishment of a pioneering pharmacist-led preoperative diabetes service, which has significantly reduced patient length of stay and improved glycaemic control in individuals with diabetes awaiting cardiac surgery. This initiative was recognized as an oral presentation at the Diabetes UK (DUK) Conference.
Currently, Zainab leads the “Capture AF” project, which focuses on community pharmacy detection of atrial fibrillation using single-lead ECG technology. This pilot has been highly successful, earning accolades such as the Digital Innovation Award at the Clinical Pharmacy Congress and the Public Health Award at the C+D Awards, as well as an abstract presentation at the ESC Conference. The project has since secured external funding to establish AF Hubs within GP practices, managed by specialist pharmacists. In this role, Zainab develops robust training packages to upskill pharmacists in AF detection and ECG recognition.
Zainab was also selected for the highly competitive Diabetes UK Clinical Champion (2020-2022) leadership program. She holds a Master’s in Advanced Pharmacy Practice and has developed strong skills in research and innovation, with aspirations to credential as a Consultant Pharmacist in the future. A sought-after speaker, she has been invited to present at numerous conferences, showcasing her work in cardiovascular innovation and supporting other regions in developing their services.
