After nearly two decades in the pharmaceutical industry, including a fulfilling tenure at MSD leading initiatives in strategy, learning, and career development, Yam found himself at a crossroads: remain in a role he loved or take a leap to create something greater. This decision led to the next stage of The Black Sherpa—a mission-driven platform designed to empower underrepresented talent to break through systemic barriers and achieve career progression and satisfaction.
At MSD, Yam worked on projects that fuelled business growth while championing employee development and inclusion. One of his proudest achievements was leading the award-winning Lead Your Career program, which accelerated professional growth, promoted allyship, and received recognition for excellence in education. These experiences deepened his passion for creating pathways for those navigating workplace challenges.
The Black Sherpa began as a podcast focused on social mobility, career progression, and personal growth. It is now evolving into a platform for tangible change. Along the way, Yam has observed how exclusive workplace cultures, biased hiring practices, and low-impact diversity initiatives can hold back talented individuals. He has also been inspired by those who break through barriers, support others, and drive meaningful change in an environment often fatigued by equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) efforts. Determined to deliver effective solutions, he is committed to equipping individuals with the tools, support, and confidence needed to thrive in spaces that often overlook them.
This mission is deeply personal. As a father of mixed-race children, Yam envisions a future where their talent, and the talent of others like them, can shine without limits. His goal is to make diverse leadership the norm rather than the exception.
The Black Sherpa is not just about conversations—it is about action. By building in public and partnering with individuals and organisations, Yam aims to help create inclusive workplaces where talent is recognised, nurtured, and elevated.
