Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, Mildon

For me, it’s about impact.

As a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Consultant at Mildon, I work with a variety of organisations at different stages of their diversity and inclusion journey. Some companies are just hearing about DEI, whereas others have already embedded it into their business but need a little further support. At each stage of the journey, my purpose is to make sure that it positively impacts as many people as possible.

Looking back, I can see DEI was always a passion of mine, which is why I spent 10 years working in the charitable sector.

I taught English, took students hiking through the Himalayas, and worked with women who were survivors of human trafficking, supporting them with independent income generation projects. I’ve also monitored wildlife behaviour and have overseen various sustainability projects. I even measured giant tortoises’ toenails in the Seychelles – in case you’re wondering why, this might help us establish their gender more easily!

Like many others, George Floyd’s murder was a wake up call. I wanted to better represent communities, find ways to make organisations more inclusive, and personally do more. At work I created the first DEI network, but as we only met every 6 weeks, I found myself yearning to become more immersed in the DEI sector which is how I began working at Mildon. My DEI specialisms are gender studies, and DEI within the charitable sector, although I have a variety of DEI qualifications including Level 5 Award Managing Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Gender and Sexuality and LGBT Inclusion in the workplace. I’m also accredited to use the GC Index and Talogy Perspectives tools.

As well as a DEI Consultant I’m also a coach. I concentrate on two core areas:

Enabling people to find purposeful careers. How we spend our time every day, week and month has an impact – on us, and on others – so I support those looking to discover what their values are and how this can enable them to find fulfilling and meaningful work.

Guiding leaders who want to be the new wave generation of leaders. These leaders are inclusive, work with diverse teams, and have a clear purpose too, in contrast to the more traditional leadership styles of working with teams that look like them and hiring carbon copies of themselves. I’m here to coach leaders interested in having a fresh take on leadership and management.
