Obesity presents a significant public health challenge, both within the UK and internationally. Strongly implicated in diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and mental ill-health, successive governments have sought to tackle obesity without, it seems, measurable success.

In July 2020, the UK government published Tackling obesity: empowering adults and children to live healthier lives , summarising policies to enable healthier lifestyles and its commitment to more NHS weight management services. Later this year, it is proposed that restrictions to foods and drinks that are high in fat and sugar will be introduced to tackle rising obesity levels.

But will any of these measures work?

In this webinar, we will take a broad look at the problem of obesity, its causes, prevalence and impact. We will outline some of the medical interventions for severe obesity, the role of diet and exercise, cultural conditions that may be relevant and examine whether social inequalities play a significant role in its incidence.
